I decided once that it was probably a good idea never to move to a country you’d not visited on holiday before. I reasoned that taking that sort of gamble would make it much harder to settle. All my evidence for this theory was drawn from the case of Garry O’Connor, a footballer who moved to Moscow for a few months before his partner decided that it was too cold and they had to return to the UK.

And yet despite the stern moral of that story I find myself ignoring my own well-thought out advice and about to move to South Korea for the next year. I fully expect that it will be difficult. I imagine after a few weeks I’ll be a blithering, sweaty mess, slumped in the corner of a dark room attempting to deep-fry my own arm to overcome fatty food withdrawal symptoms.

But then I clearly have a vivid imagination. It might turn out okay. It might be as rewarding, life-affirming and memorable as everyone says these sort of things are. At the moment it’s just a terrifyingly ominous cloud of ambiguity on the (new) horizon. But the plan is to carefully document all the notable happenings here in this blog, along with some thoughts on missing Scotland, not missing Scotland, liking Korea, not liking Korea. Really running the gamut of emotions.

There will also be some nice photos.
